We swallow around 1 billion of bacteria every single day. They are most commonly found in raw food, but they can also hide in heated food. We also consume them when we bite our nails or when we kiss our partner.
Some bacteria make it all the way to our large intestine. If you are starting to freak out, don’t worry; most of them are totally harmless and actually even beneficial.
However the truth is that most of the bacteria have not been examined yet and we have no clue about how they can affect us. Healthy bacteria are a part of our everyday life, they surround us each and every day and we would not survive without them. It is important to note that in the earlier days, each fermenting process had its own bacteria. Germans used different bacteria for fermenting their cabbage compared to the Asians and their kimchi. However, nowadays the process of fermentation is standardized and unfortunately the bacteria are not so diverse.
What are probiotics?
The bacteria that have been examined already and we know are good for us are called probiotics. The most famous ones are members of lactobacilli and bifid bacteria. They can be found in yoghurt, buttermilk, fermented cabbage and other fermented vegetables. They contribute to well-functioning intestines and therefore they strengthen and protect our immune system.
In addition, probiotics stop harmful bacteria from procreating, they help digest food, improve absorption of nutrients and they also have important role in the prevention of diseases such as intestines inflammation, skin problems or colon cancer.
Probiotics – next to the natural resources – can be bought in pills. You can be sure what bacteria is in it and you also have a better chance of them arriving to your colon, where we need them, and that they will survive the digestive system, including the gastric acids.
When should you switch to pills
Probiotics in pill form are important supplement especially after antibiotics treatment. The reason why is because antibiotics destroy not only the harmful bacteria but also the beneficial ones.
After a round of antibiotics we therefore need to renew our gut flora. But it is not just antibiotics that destroy beneficial bacteria in our intestines. They are also harmed by bad diet, stress, alcohol and many other medicines. Probiotics are a great supplement when one suffers from diarrhea, constipation, bloating and other issues connected to the digestive system.
My review of ProbioticsOne Daily Support
I have recently got an offer to try the probiotics brand ProbioticsOne Daily Support. I have never taken any probiotics supplements because as you probably know, I prefer to rely on a quality diet. I try to include fermented foods such as fermented cabbage or kimchi. I have agreed to the offer driven mainly by my curiosity. I also liked the fact that the pills are vegan, non-GMO and naturally gluten-free.
Big plus is the fact that you do not have to store them in a fridge and you can consume them with food as well as without food. Digestion and the support of digestive system is a long journey, it is not as easy as simply taking few pills for a week and it’s all fixed! By consuming probiotics, you are digesting beneficial bacteria but you also have to feed them healthy nutritious diet so they do not die immediately and can function effectively. When I started to take the probiotics I did not just complete an antibiotics treatment or anything like that and my digestion was not in a bad state at all. Hence I have not observed any major changes. However, I can say that I felt better while taking them.
I am not very committed when it comes down to taking pills regularly so I did not take them every day, but I have instinctively reached for them every time I did not feel well, for example when I felt bloated. I don’t know if it was just a placebo or not but the truth is, I did feel better every time I have taken the probiotics. Placebo or not, I’ll take it!

Update: I took the probiotics with me to Thailand and I’m so glad I did. I had some tummy issues at the beginning (mostly because I was stupidly eating gluten before my travels which causes distress to my digestive system) and probiotics for sure helped with my quick recovery!
